Abstract. We examine the relationship between portrait composition and the standing attributed to the subject by independent raters. Across 2,418,306 portraits and a rating panel of 11,200 adults, we find a strong, consistent association between 5iveHead Score and rated competence, trustworthiness and seniority (R² = 0.94). The association holds across all 41 professions studied. We discuss implications for identification, recruitment and professional presentation.

1. Introduction

Portraits shape first impressions. In recruitment, travel and professional networking, a single image is routinely used to make fast decisions about people. Despite this, there is little consensus on what makes a portrait effective. This paper introduces the 5iveHead Score, a composite measure of portrait composition, and examines its relationship with how subjects are perceived.

2. Method

Portraits were collected from consenting 5iveHead users between 2025 and 2026 and scored before and after optimisation. A panel of 11,200 adult raters, recruited across eight countries, viewed randomised portraits for three seconds each and scored them on five-point scales for competence, trustworthiness and seniority. Raters were not told that portraits had been optimised.

3. Findings

Rated standing increased steadily with 5iveHead Score across the full range of the scale. The association was strongest between scores of 60 and 95, and plateaued only at the very top of the scale.

Gains were largest among those with the lowest starting scores, suggesting that the effect is not limited to any one profession or seniority.

5. Limitations

Our sample is drawn from users who chose to optimise a portrait, and may not be representative of the wider population. Raters viewed portraits briefly and in isolation. We did not study the effect over time. Results may vary.

6. Conclusion

Portrait composition is measurable and is strongly associated with perceived standing. We recommend that individuals and organisations treat portrait presentation as a matter of standards rather than chance.
